Israel Sanchez is the director of equity & business development for GO Topeka, where he works on various initiatives to improve the community’s overall programs that relate to small business DE&I efforts. Originally from Havana, Cuba, Israel has called Topeka his home for over a decade. When he’s not busy finding ways to make the community a better place to live, Israel enjoys spending quality time with his family. In his free time, he works on writing several books, a passion that has been with him for years.

What inspired you to work in the field of community economic development?
Creating a local community where people of all races, creeds and genders have access and the ability to improve their lives, and by extension, that of those around them is a big motivating factor for me to get involved in the field of community economic development.

In your opinion, what are some of the most important factors in building a strong and sustainable local economy?
Some of the most important factors in building a strong and sustainable local economy are encouraging entrepreneurship, improving quality of life and access to capital. While these are not the only factors, they are certainly important ones. I’m glad to work in an organization that actively works to make these things happen.

How does the organization involve and engage with the local community to ensure its economic development efforts are aligned with their needs and priorities?
Our organization has many umbrella organizations, as well as strategic partners, that ensure that we have the pulse of what our communities need and prioritize. We also have strong relationships with legislators and key influences in order to make that happen, or at least start those conversations.

Israel is the creative mind behind Kansas Young, a video series project that showcases the work of young artists and creators who call Kansas home. Through this project, Israel highlights the vibrant and diverse creative community that exists in the state, while also inspiring and encouraging others to pursue their passions and dreams.
