Infrastructure Investment: Unlocking Access Across Shawnee County

By Bob Ross, President, Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce

When businesses evaluate where to expand or locate a new facility, access and infrastructure are often the first considerations. For Topeka and Shawnee County, two proposed highway interchanges offer exactly that kind of opportunity: one in southeast Topeka near I-470 at SE 29th and California, and another in west Shawnee County at Auburn Road and I-35.

These projects are about more than convenience. They are about safety, connectivity, and economic competitiveness.

The Auburn interchange would address a well-documented safety gap along the turnpike, where drivers currently face long distances between exits. At the same time, it would improve access for residents, employers, and emergency services while opening new opportunities for housing and commercial growth.

On the east side, an interchange near Lake Shawnee would better serve more than two million annual visitors while unlocking nearby retail, residential, and business development potential for East Topeka. Improved access in this corridor strengthens quality of place and makes Topeka more attractive to families, entrepreneurs, and employers alike.

Encouragingly, strong local and regional partners are working to move this effort forward. Shawnee County is pursuing transportation studies, as the City of Topeka continues planning and coordination. The Kansas Turnpike Authority has signaled a willingness to support these projects. These efforts demonstrate real momentum and local commitment.

By aligning city, county, and state resources, we can advance projects that improve safety, reduce congestion, and position Topeka and Kansas for sustained growth. With continued collaboration, these interchanges can move from concept to construction and deliver lasting benefits for businesses, families, and the entire region.
